Training & Tips - Monica J. Oesterling

After taking in Stanley, a 1 year old border collie in 2003, Monica went dog-gone crazy and decided to become a dog trainer. Many trainers begin their careers the same way. They realize their dog has "special needs" and they set forth to pursue any knowledge about dogs they can get their hands on. Finding the most up-to-date information about training and behavior is no easy task and it is difficult to know what is best. Many outdated books (even some written recently) about dog training are readily available and even revered. Anyone can call them self a dog trainer as the industry is unregulated and it seems, especially today, that everyone is an "expert" or some sort of "whisperer". What to do?

Monica first pursued and became an ABCDT (certified through Animal Behavior College), then a CPDT (Certified Pet Dog Trainer) and is a professional member of APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) whose motto is "building better trainers through education". Monica attends yearly educational conferences and is committed to continuing her canine-related education, always seeking, reading, and viewing the most up-to-date dog related information from health and nutrition to behavior and training.

Monica teaches and practices reward-based training techniques. It is undeniable that using rewards to teach and train is highly FUN (for the trainer and the dog) and extremely effective for creative, uninhibited teaching and learning. Monica's dog, Lenny, for one example, has been taught to put his ear to the ground to "listen" for earthquakes! (Lenny, an hilarious, terrier-ist, was acquired back in December 2006 (at age 1) as his previous Dad moved.)
